I'm gonna go with Aaron Lipstadt, I don't know anything about him except what i read on a wiki page but the guy directed Yankee Dollar, Payback & El Veijo. Arguably the best episodes on the show. Nuff said. It's a shame Michael mann didn't step up to direct one. You would have thought he'd jump at the chance.Don johnson was actually pretty good too. The ones he did stand out well.

Aaron Lipstadt was a great director he also worked on huge 1980s shows "Cagney and Lacey" and "Dynasty" .:DJohn Nicolella directed the most episodes from Season 1-3 . Also enjoyed Russ Mayberry's work in Season 5.:shout::D

MV had many directors and used some great directors only once . I loved Jim Johnstone's work in "Nobody Lives Forever" and "Out where the Buses..." but his work for "Honor Among Thieves " in Season 4 was awful. Virgil W Vogel and Richard Compton directed episodes between Seasons 3-5 .Colin Bucksey's work in "Like a Hurricane", "Rock and a Hard Place" and Season 5s "Victims of Circumstance" brought a human aspect to Crockett :shout::D:thumbsup:

TV Shows are the media of the Executive Producer/Showrunner. Therefore Michael Mann's handwriting is much more visible than the influence of one of the directors.

There are some directors on the show you can intuitively tell that they know what their doing. And then you got give a little take a little that is a mess of epic proportions. You tell guys like Lipstadt, Nicolella, Rob Cohen made an episode 'cause they look more polished and cinematic compared to other eps.

Loved Colin Bucksey's work ( "Death and the lady" , " Like a Hurricane", "Rock and a Hard Place " and "Victims of Circumstance" )

Jim Johnstone's Season 1 and 2 work on "Nobody Lives Forever" , "Out Where ..." and " Trust Fund Pirates " .

MV used many directors some first time .

Paul Michael Glaser's work on "The Prodigal Son" was so good as well as Lee H. Katzin on " Cool Runnin'"  and Richard A. Colla who directed one episode "Hit List" in 1984.

So many good directors - in later seasons Star Trek Next Generation directors such as Richard Compton and Russ Mayberry directed several  Season 3-5 episodes.

For work on the show, gotta go with Paul Michael Glaser. Calderone's Return Part II, Smuggler's Blues and The Prodigal Son are some of the most cinematic episodes in a series already very cinematic.

For a director I know of who went on to make other great films that would be Abel Ferrara. His two episodes The Home Invaders and Dutch Oven aren't favorites of mine or many others (although arguing how much influence a director has over an episode, watching these in succession with some of his films I could tell who was behind the camera on those) but he did go on to make King of New York and Bad Lieutenant and had already had a cult hit with Ms. 45 before doing those episodes.

Don Johnson also directed "Back in the World" , " "By Hooker by Crook", "Love at First Sight" and the fantastic Season 5 premiere "Hostile Takeover".

He was a good director and stepped in and directed large chunks of "One Way Ticket" and " When Irish Eyes are Crying "

I read somewhere on here a while back DJ often stepped in for directors. Those two episodes in particular DJ was very active particularly after Mario Dileo was injured on "WIEAC" in 1986.

I enjoyed Mario Dileo's work on Miami Vice in the two episodes he directed "When Irish..." and "The Good Collar" he was a new director in 1986.

Leon Ichaso also produced some fine work "Little Miss Dangerous", "Killshot" , "Better Living...." and "The Rising Sun of Death" - quite stylized work.

Richard Compton did most of the better episodes in S3-5.

and Leon ichaso was alright, but he didn't really have good material to work with.. Michael mann himself couldn't make a good episode out of these scripts they are so bad.. :)

Dick Compton directed early 1985-86 episodes of The Equalizer before starting on MV in the fall of 1986 on the two parter "Down For The Count " in Season 3. He went on to direct "Everybodys in Showbiz" ,"The Big Thaw" , "Badge of Dishonor" and "Mirror Image" . He directed two episodes in Season 5 also.

Then he moved to Star Trek :NXGen and Babylon 5 in the 90s.

For me this is a very easy question: Rob Cohen

Made For Each Other
Evan
Definitely Miami

Each of these eps is completely distinct with a different tone than the other two. First the light-hearted comedy, then the deeply personal and tragic drama, then the sensual fantasy.

I'm gonna go with Aaron Lipstadt, I don't know anything about him except what i read on a wiki page but the guy directed Yankee Dollar, Payback & El Veijo. Arguably the best episodes on the show. I remember having this discussion ten years ago and I can't figure out why Lipstadt's name doesn't even ring a bell.  I don't even remember anyone bringing up his name.  Those were three great eps. I used to think El Viejo was merely in the S3 Top 10, but now I think it was actually the best of the entire season. If only they had hired an actual actor instead of Willie Nelson!

Very very interesting info!!!

Yes, I always thought the eps DJ directed had a really superb touch. These eps weren't quite my tip-top favorites, but the direction was brilliant. I am going ahead and ranking DJ as my #2 director.

I can't really rate John Nicolella because it's hard for me to separate his roles.  He directed a bunch of eps and produced all of S1/S2.  Replacing him with Dick Wolf was arguably the worst decision of Michael Mann's career.

Paul Michael Glaser

Calderone's Return (part II)

Smuggler's Blues

The Prodigal Son

I do love Rob Cohen's episodes, it was between those two.

Richard Compton. He directed some of my favourite eps. And Leon Ichaso always did a good job directing, especially on Little Miss Dangerous

It's a shame pilot director Thomas Carter never returned for more episodes. He really laid the groundwork for what the series style would be.

Glazer would be my choice. His work was pretty eye catching.

Yeh big props to Thomas Carter. The pilot might be the best Michael Mann looking film/tv show that isn't Mann. Outstanding job and ahead of it's time.

Agrre with most of these. Another way to look at it is who were the best directors who happened to work on MV, in that case I say Abel Ferrara and Leon Ichaso.  EJO is not a bad director either in his own right.
