Crockett's trench coat?

I stumbled across this pic from a 1987 calendar online.  The calendar being a 1987, would have been printed in fall of 1986.  The black Testarossa, and Johnson's hair looking more like 2nd season, would suggest that this promo photo was taken before filming third season.  I think Crockett in a "hero" coat would have been pretty awesome.  However this is probably another case of where Miami Vice wandered into ahead of their time category, as the hero in the long coat movement didn't take off until the early '90s.

This was taken at the beginning of the third season in the Summer of 1986 - great look by Don he wore the white vest on the show but never the trench coat  :dance2:

I keep thinking that this was somehow inspired by Smooth Criminal somehow, and I get the feeling this was shot above LA inbetween the seasons when the TR first arrived from Italy in black metalic.

Thank goodness they didn't leave the Testarossa black. It's a sharp color but night time scenes would have been a nightmare trying to get it to show up properly, and that trenchcoat . . . it's great for photo's and all but take it from someone who actually worked as a bodyguard down there. Even a light coat was enough to make me sweat profusely so imagine what an entire trenchcoat would have done!  :hot:

That is a fact.  Georgia is not nearly as hot as South Florida, but I try to wear a light (linen or silk) sport coat when I go to functions or do press releases.  It is miserable.  Due to the heat I usually wear an IWB holster with a shirt tail out over it on a day to day basis.  I even bought the Galco Miami lite rig, but your jacket wants to stick to you.  Every time I watch MV I get a new appreciation for what it must have been like to film in the heat wearing even a very light jacket.

I get the feeling that really most of the time they looked like they did in Definitely Miami, with sweat all over their faces when the air con busted in the OCD.

Definitely. I've been in Miami this july and didn't see a single man wearing a jacket. Everybody, men and women just had shorts and a t shirt on. Wonder how they did it back then, not only C&T, but so many of the actors were wearing jackets, ties (!) and so on. Maybe the global warming was not serious at that time...

And taking the pic of my current avatar has been like frying LOL

The answer: lots of wardrobe changes inbetween takes.  :) Nobody stays that dry in Florida with that much clothing on.

Well maybe they just weren't dressed that way because it isn't the style anymore? I always thought the Crockett wardrobe made sense for a tropical location. The jackets he wore were very light. And he frequently took them off and was wearing always wearing either a short-sleeved shirt or a tank top underneath them. Also his pants looked very light too. Also Tubbs, at least in the earlier episodes, seemed to always have his shirt half way open. He also wore light-colored clothing and sometimes t-shirts. Some of the things they had him wear later on though were a bit too much. The ties and the heavier type of blazers for example. They must have taken frequent breaks because some of the stuff he wore in some episodes looks like he would have gotten heat stroke. I do imagine that they were quite cool and comfortable in the first season's wardrobe at least. Now as for me, I live in Texas where it gets to be 100+ in July and August. In those two months, there are probably 40 days total where it's a 100 or over, the remaining days of summer it's 95-99. There isn't a single August where we don't get a 105 degree day. I've never been to South Florida, but they have that nice ocean breeze, and I read it doesn't get insanely hot like it does here. I think at most it goes up to a cool 88-90. Trust me, once you've been through the 105 then 85-90 seems cool! During the summer, the weather forecasters here get excited when the temperature highs for the day are only 90. It's quite rare to see that here between mid July and early September.

Those were popular in the mid 1980's.  That picture being taken at night would be the only time that Crockett would even think of wearing that down here.  I had one back in the day, it was strickly a fashion statement...

I know that there's no love lost here for the idea of Crockett wearing a trenchcoat, -

but, i think that it would have been an interesting concept for an episode or two.

Of course the hot Miami weather would have taken the toll for wearing such piece of cloth, -

but i don't see why not. Maybe during a night scene, like the one in the season 3 promo calendar.

The main thing here is of course the weather - you would have propably, even at nightime, -

had a pretty sticky situations when wearing that thing. Even dehydration possibly.

That being said - i'm just pretty much glad they stick'ed with the breathable linen blazers and such.
