Where did our members go?

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your wife, CharlieGlide. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My wife is not a big Miami Vice fan but she buys me little MV items or lets me know about MV articles or about DJ & PMT.

She also asked me to give you her condolences.

I for one don't see Facebook lasting all that long, and likely going the way of Myspace and some other media.

See http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/10593826/Facebook-will-die-out-like-the-bubonic-plague.html  for an interesting perspective on this.

Personally I have not had the desire to create an account and get deluged with mindless updates from "friends" or endless marketing ads. Btw, there are huge personal info privacy concerns raised recently about Facebook as well that should give many reason to pause.

Not sure why we have seen the falloff in here, perhaps it is the short term explosion of social media or perhaps the more active past members had other life events that took precedence. Stuff happens, as they say.

Getting new members to participate is key to gaining fresh insights, new topics, or even new takes on old topics.

Sorry to change the subject but I have a point I want to make on this, The other thing is well this showed up on my radar about facebook:

I was tempted to write something about this in the strange news section but I figured this was par for the course with this kind of stuff really.

and please forgive the thumbnail, I cant choose that as I wouldnt use an image like that if I could help it.

and all the more reason I avoid twitter and facebook, hell the more I surf youtube the more I'm starting to see why people use adblock, as its like an ADHD smorgasboard with all of the F'ing werid and offensive ads they play.

like the fake your pc perfomance is slow ad or the your missing the video converter tool stuff, like does no one on youtube check this stuff?

I really hate Facebook & deactivated my account. My wife plays games on there & also shows me pics of our 3 yr. old grandson. One friend always writes on FB that she had a sandwich & now will take a chill pill & watch TV. I don't have time for such mundane crap.

I do get those slow PC ads (I guess on youtube?) I would never click on it.

I look at Twitter occasionally but no one ever posts to me.

This site is the only one that has meaningful conversations!

I have always said that life comes first, then you come here to relax, unwind, vent or whatever.  I may be wrong but I thought that lately the site was experiencing a boost in activity. There are new members joining everyday and they're actually posting!  This is great! The majority usually join, browse for a while but never post. It's good to see new members jumping in.

This site, just like many other sites, has always had it's ups and downs in activity. It's just a normal progression of sorts. Interests shift, members come and go. Some members move on to other things and some just stay the path no matter what. basically life gets in the way. It;s unavoidable. But I'm happy that this site has always been somewhere that members can come to at the end of a busy day to chat with friends and unwind.

To new members: welcome to our site. Please feel free to join in on the discussions or create new ones. If anyone has a new idea, please let us know.

Enjoy!

I agree with many of the points. The haydays of Don Johnson "afterprojects" such as the reruns of his other series etc was fodder for discussion and relating it to MV or whatever.

I miss Coops constant postings of cool stuff and this year is tough for me as its the first year in the last seventeen that I have NOT been in the water! Last august I blew the engine up in my boat and am putting a new one in right now so keeping busy with that.

As for facebook, twitter and other social media I rarely facebook and never twitter. I pop in here from time to time and try to participate as w=best I can but topics are dry and redundant for me. Ocassionally there are good threads and I do post on them.

I find the newer members (no insult intended) are merely lurkers seeking info and the core fans of the show like myself are the true lovers of the series and have exhausted many of the topics that interested us in the beginning.

I do hope things pic up but it's summer and I rarely even fire up the laptop.............

Maybe when winter comes people will check back in and participate again. In the meantime lets get outside for some fresh air and a tan!

I know what you mean, I had to install Adblock as those ads were reeking all sorts of hell on my connection. YouTube checks nothing themselves given their failure rate on video performance and everything nowadays with them is automated.

I recently just quit Facebook, handed over the account to my mom so she uses it for her games. I only really joined up there as a contingency for when this site goes down then used it for a while for the news feed but they have that so messed up I just pulled the plug. I tried Twitter and found it to be a mess to use. I think forums are better if you find the right one like this one.

I agree with your comments.

Sorry to hear about the boat.

I miss COOPs post also.

I still have my facebook account but never post on it and mostly use it to get updates and information from other sites, like this one. Some people put way too much info about themselves on facebook. Apart from too much personal info they also post stuff like "went to the shop' or "just had dinner" which I don't really give a rats about.

I have been AWOL the last year or so, checking in from time to time, but have had issues with my mum having dementia, plus work and family life on top of that I just don't get much time lately.

Still love this site and the whole community aspect of it.

I haven't bothered to post on here in recent months because when I have, about filming locations, it was virtually ignored except for one maybe two members. Others were jumping in over my posts, replying to each other & not bothering to mention any of my input which included photos of Miami Beach. Nor was I interested in reading endless posts on who was the sexiest woman in Vice. I know we all have our interests within the series but there used to be a real feeling of camaraderie on the site and there used to be communication within the group NOT just within a few pals where one feels an outsider if you are not within this select few. This is my 2 cents.

(Oh, and although my profile says to the contrary, I have been a member since this group on the German site began, a year before the previous Dutch-owned site went belly-up. It's just after the site was hacked, my profile was lost. Therefore being on here as a long-time member, I know what it used to be like on both sites)

Though I am not a pro location whiz, I always thought your contributions were great. Good pics and good comments about some unique location spots.

I haven't been around all that much, but I still lurk from time to time. Great articles and awesome information, as always. I still do rock the style from time to time, but I'm now employed in a more button-down, corporate setting which makes it difficult to do so at times. I still need to up my game a bit one of these days... :D

I should mention that I was a member here for many years but circumstances led me to cancel my account for a year.  During that year I still visited regularly as a guest but obviously I couldn't post.  Now I'm back under a new identity, breaking all the rules of Witness Protection!

I agree with what's been said regarding why members here can be so fickle and transient. There are many people who are casual or latent fans, if you will, who rediscover Vice and get swept up in the nostalgia but, unfortunately, the appetite of these people is easily satiated, much to the dismay of fans like us whose lives have been deeply touched by the show.  I think this explains much of it.

There's a smaller percentage of folks who have alienated themselves because life happens and they just don't have the time to make meaningful contributions to the site.  We've all been there, as Crockett would say.  I think these people, who are true fans, have too much on their plate and Vice is subordinated to weightier matters (God, family, job, etc.).  It's been my experience that it's easy to check in on the site regularly but if my mind has been on other things it's not easy to post.  Posting (usually) requires (good) ideas and if I haven't been watching the show on my own and thinking about show I usually have nothing of value to say so I don't post, which gives the impression I've disappeared.

Now sometimes, through the course of events, websites broaden their scope and become closer to all-purpose social hubs.  I guess you could call it social evolution, like the way four guys sitting around a table will see their original topic of conversation evolve into something completely unexpected.  I have personally never used MVO for general socializing, under any name, which means that when I have nothing new and interesting (in my opinion) to share about Miami Vice I don't post and thus I may appear to have turned rabbit, as Trudy once said.  On the other hand, if someone isn't as discriminating in what they post it's easier to have a constant presence.  Both approaches are perfectly fine and the latter is much better for maintaining continuity in a place like this.  But if you're like me it's impossible to sometimes not give the appearance of giving up.  I know I will never be one of these guys with 10000 posts because, for me, that would necessitate 10000 new ideas and I'm just not that prolific.  I am 100% Vice though regardless of my posting habits.  I love it and I live it.

Now if someone could just explain these "Recent Post" and "Recent Topic" boxes I'd feel so much better.  Or better yet, let's get rid of them and use something that makes sense. :)

I think I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel the same.

I was involved in two of the three MV conventions in Paris. It's true that many of our members couldn't participate for several reasons, mostly because of the money. But I created DVDs of all three events especially for those who couldn't attend. But the interest was far away from being low. It tended to zero. So I can't understand why some members argue that there's everything already said about Miami Vice. I've been a fan for more than a decade, and I think I know a lot about the show. But on the conventions I heard many new backstage stories from Mike, John and Saundra.

So if you want to have new stuff to talk and discuss about: All I can say is - buy the conventions DVDs and listen to the stories. The stuff is sufficient for another decade.

(Just to anticipate: Alex or I don't earn any money by selling the discs, 20 € are just the factory costs)

I normally wouldn't comment on this, but I think people really need to let this go.  He has been gone for over a year and a half and considering the way he left, I don't know if I would be so welcoming.  IMO, the guy used this forum to soothe his ego by loading up the recent topics with all of his posts and the like, what does that tell you? He would also get a little testy at times when challenged on certain things. I, for one, don't really miss him...there, I said it...

I agree with you MIIM......Recent Posts & Recent Topics is just filled up with every post someone makes even on one Topic.

It should be changed to maybe only the Topics people are posting on, instead of 10 slots.

How was it laid out before ?

You know, I don't remember exactly.  I remember posts that had recent activity appeared in bold and there was no duplication regardless of the number of new posts.  There was also a feature that showed you how many views and responses each topic had.  It was better than what we have now but I don't want to complain to loudly.  I've never donated any money to the site so I really have no leg to stand on.  Now if I were donating $100 a month that would be different.  But I'm not, so I'll just say "thank you" to all those who make this place possible and deal with the small inconveniences.  I imagine it will be fixed one day.

I'm embarrassed to say I never donated either. :o  I've been thinking of donating recently since I see most are $5 or $10 donations. I don't want to have my credit card # out on the internet, though. I'll look into what's involved, but if anyone has ideas for improvements to the site, I don't think it's only open to donors.

We all want a site that's easy to navigate.

Well I think the problem life gets in the way.We have other things that pop in good and bad things you don't know what goes on in the members lives.I have always loved vice and Don of course though I have found this site change in recent times and not very easy to navigate but I am trying to get through it.I am at fault for not posting much either but have had some garbage to take care of lately.Regarding Facebook you all have your opinions and I take care of this site there and some others dedicated to Don Johnson.Everybody has her and his opinions on things free country.I still love this site and will try to post when I can and will still take care of it on Facebook also.

What you say is absolutely right.  I just feel kind of bad about pointing out shortcomings when I haven't done anything to fix them.  I guess it's my own personal hangup.  I need to look into donating, too.  All this talk has got me wondering what the operating costs are of this website.  I know so little about it.  Can a mod. lay it out for us all?

Guys- I've used paypal donating funds to this site and for other transactions for years.  Never heard of any problems with paypal, it is pretty secure as far as I know.

As long as you don't have any viruses or malware, you'll be fine. I recommend doing a scan with 'Malwarebytes' first if you're paranoid. Malwarebytes is a free anti-malware program, it also detects and removes tracking cookies left by advertisers.

After that, sending payments with PayPal is very secure, and you don't even need to sign up to send a donation.

Actually Malwarebytes will not remove tracking cookies (because they are not malware), but your active antivirus program or another such as Superantispyware will do so. The bigger issue would be with keylogger Trojans and Malwarebytes will remove these.

In any case, as was stated, Paypal is a very secure and safe way to make payments on the net, and your credit card info cannot be compromised because you are not entering it on any site other than when registering on Paypal.

Really? Mine does. o.O

Anyway, what Sonny Burnett said. Tracking cookies don't really matter anyway :)

what I do in addition to all that anti stuff is I clear my history daily, and if I go to a site that's shifty I clear my history and reset my router, as a security precaution so it doesnt periodically send me something nasty if I picked up something and removed it.

as that changes the IP adress.
